Somewhere over the rainbow lies equality for one and all
 |
| Council leader Councillor Serge Lourie with members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Staff Support Group |
The international day against homophobia was marked in the borough this week with the council chief waving a rainbow flag and wearing a rainbow scarf around his neck.
Councillor Serge Lourie, leader of Richmond Council, was outside York House on Monday with members of the council's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Staff Support Group (LGBT) to mark International Day Against Homophobia, which takes place tomorrow, Saturday, May 17.
The event which is also being supported by Gaydar Radio Station and Richmond police, aims to raise awareness and combat homophobia. The LGBT group have displayed banners outside York House and Twickenham police station in the run-up to the day.
Coun Lourie said he was delighted to work with such a constructive LGBT forum and he added that although Richmond probably has lower levels of homophobic crime than in other parts of London, one assault or attack on a person simply because of their sexual orientation it was one too many.
