Bemused: Teddington (not Mortlake) residents

Teddington residents were surprised to learn that their properties had moved a few miles east earlier this week when bungling council contractors told them they lived in Mortlake.

Workers arrived in Teddington in Monday and put cones in Park Road before putting up signs informing residents they would be marking the streets in preparation for the introduction of the Mortlake Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ).

Teddington residents, many already upset about the introduction of the zone, have complained about the workers' actions, with the CPZ not yet formalised.

Traffic orders for the zone - from 8.30am to 10.30am, Monday to Friday, in 11 roads close to Teddington station - were due to be made in the first week of June and come into operation on Monday, June 16, but three further roads, Avenue Road, Blackmores Grove and Field Lane, are currently being consulted to see if they want to be part of it.

Councillor David Trigg, Richmond Council cabinet member for traffic, transport and parking, said roadmarking contractors were starting to install the line marking for the new Teddington CPZ but did not follow instructions.

He said: "They have not only coned off an inappropriately long length of Park Road but have used warning notices from Mortlake and marked corners with white hatching rather than double yellow lines.

"This performance by our contractors is not acceptable and I have instructed officers to increase their supervision of the roadmarking gang and ensure that they implement remedial measures where necessary.

"This will enable the new zone to be introduced as scheduled in June."
